Steel Pipe Rehabilitation

2012

Structural Retrofit and Relining of Cast Iron Pipes

This pipe rehabilitation project of a 1940s gravity transmission pipe line is a 5.5-km. long cast iron pipe with diameter ranging from 900mm to 1350mm.

The concessionaire client sought to reactivate this line almost eight years after it was decommissioned in the year 2004, to serve as express line that will provide adequate supply of water to the city.

EC Structural Composites, Inc. (ECSCI) rehabilitated the line employing Fyfe’s U.S. patented Tyfo Fibrwrap Pipe Rehabilitation  System.  ECSCI applied one layer of Tyfo SEH-25A as dielectric barrier between the steel pipe and the required layers of Tyfo SCH-41 both on circumferential and longitudinal directions of the pipe to structurally retrofit the transmission line.  As final treatment, a potable water coating (Tyfo PWC) was applied on the entire length of the pipeline.

The actual rehabilitation works on this line was completed over a short period of five (5) months, despite the engineering and safety challenges it presented due to its size, confined character and length.
